#2 of 1

The ruins of Dundrennan Abbey, on the north (Scottish) bank of the Solway Firth, a former Cistercian abbey. It was here, on 15th May 1568, that Mary Stuart (known to history as Mary, Queen of Scots) spent her last night in Scotland, following her defeat two days previously at the Battle of Langside. Next morning a fishing boat transported her across the River Solway into England. where she was imprisoned on the orders of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth of England. Less that eleven years later she was executed on Elizabeth's orders.
