According to legend, the name Antwerp (Antwerpen in Dutch) comes from the Dutch “handwerpen” (‘hand-throwing’). The legend says that the giant Antigoon lived near the River Scheldt and demanded a toll from passing boatmen. If anyone refused to pay the giant punished them by cutting off their hand and throwing it in the river. Finally a young hero named Silvius Brabo succeeded in killing the giant, and cut off his dead hand and threw it in the river.
