The Medici Fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg was commissioned around 1630 by Marie de Medici, second wife of Henri IV, king of both France and Navarre. Following his assassination in May 1610, the day after she was finally crowned Queen of France (!), she became regent to her eight-year-old son, Louis XIII, and reigned until she was overthrown in 1617 in a palace coup led by her son. However, she returned from exile two years later, and concentrated for the next few years on the construction of her Luxembourg Palace.
