When the capital of Spain was moved from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the latter had no cathedral. Plans to build one were brought up almost immediately, but the cost of building and maintaining Spain's vast overseas empire always took priority, and so construction did not get underway until 1883. It was finally completed in 1993.
