During the last few months of World War II thousands of Jews were murdered by the Hungarian government, which was allied to Nazi Germany. Victims were lined up on the bank of the Danube, ordered to remove their shoes (which were valuable and could be resold), then shot so that their bodies fell into the river to be carried away. This memorial was unveiled in April 2005.
