Pink is the colour of the Giro d'Italia, in the same way that yellow is the colour of the Tour de France, and for the same reason. Both races were originally organised by sports newspapers that were printed on cheap, coloured newsprint; pink in the case of Il Gazetto della Sport, yellow in the case of L'Auto (today renamed L'Equipe).
